Azure announces Geo-Location
Microsoft announced today that the Azure platform ( both compute as well as storage ) will support Geo -Location.
What does this mean ?
This means that Enterprises can now decide where their data and applications will reside.
Why is this a big deal ?
This is a big deal for a variety of reasons. Having control over where your application and storage resides is important for the the following reasons:
1. Performance -> Imaging having to serve up videos for East Asian Employees from the San Antonio Data Center – it doesnt scale very well
2. Regulatory reasons -> Enough said – EU , Patriot Act etc
3. Fail Over and Disaster Recovery -> Hedging your bets on the next Katrina or the next time the earth decides to shake a little.
